I ran for the UCP nomination because MLAs like Tany Yao were out of touch, hiding from the people they were meant to represent. As a working-class Albertan, I understand the struggles of our community, and that’s why I won—because Fort McMurray deserves real representation.
The recent actions surrounding the UCP nomination process and the subsequent changes to party bylaws highlight a deeply troubling trend that raises serious concerns about democratic integrity and accountability in Alberta.
Zulkifl Mujahid’s victory in the UCP nomination election over Tany Yao was a significant moment for the working-class people of Fort McMurray, symbolizing a shift towards representation that prioritizes the voices of ordinary Albertans. Unlike Yao, who has been criticized for his detachment from the constituency and a taxpayer-funded lifestyle of complacency, Mujahid’s candidacy offered a much-needed alternative for a community long overlooked by political elites.
However, Premier Danielle Smith’s decision to amend UCP bylaws overnight on April 19, 2023—granting herself the authority to appoint all 87 MLA candidates—is nothing short of a democratic affront. Such a move reeks of political opportunism and authoritarianism, undermining the foundational principles of representative democracy. By bypassing the will of the party members and reinstating defeated candidates like Tany Yao, Smith has sent a clear message: loyalty to her administration matters more than the democratic will of the people.
This blatant power grab raises critical questions. If the premier can unilaterally overturn the results of nomination #elections, what purpose do these elections serve? How can #voters trust a #government that manipulates its internal rules to maintain control and protect its inner circle? The situation exposes a chilling reality: the erosion of democracy in #Alberta under a leadership that prioritizes cronyism over #accountability.
Tany Yao’s return under these circumstances underscores the rot at the core of this political maneuvering. Rather than addressing concerns about his lack of engagement with constituents, Yao now benefits from an #undemocratic process that circumvents the very electorate he is supposed to serve. This betrayal is not just of #FortMcMurray residents but of every #Albertan who values transparency, fairness, and #democratic governance.

In a #province that prides itself on hard work and resilience, this kind of #political#tyranny is unacceptable. Danielle Smith and her allies must be held #accountable for undermining #democracy to prop up ineffective #politicians. Albertans deserve leaders who represent their interests—not pawns in a political game designed to silence dissent and concentrate power.
